Concern about endocrine disruptors has also reached daily hygiene products. And deodorant is one of the most widely used: we apply it daily, in an area with high skin absorption and close to breast tissue.

But... do all deodorants really contain substances of concern?
And which brands are safer?

In this article we take an objective look at which ingredients to watch out for and which options are more respectful of your hormonal balance.

What are endocrine disruptors?

Endocrine disruptors are substances that can interfere with the body's hormonal system. They can:

  • Mimic hormones (such as estrogens)

  • Block hormone receptors

  • Alter the synthesis or elimination of hormones

Not all products contain these compounds, but some cosmetic ingredients have been the subject of scientific debate.

Controversial ingredients in deodorants

Aluminum salts (in antiperspirants)

  • Aluminum Chlorohydrate

  • Aluminum Zirconium

They are used to block sweating.
Some studies have raised its possible weak estrogenic activity, although the evidence is not conclusive.

Important: not all deodorants contain aluminum. Only antiperspirants.

Parabens

  • Methylparaben

  • Propylparaben

They have mild estrogenic activity demonstrated in the laboratory.
In the European Union they are regulated and limited.

Triclosan

Antibacterial that was questioned for its possible hormonal impact.
It is currently highly restricted in the EU.

Synthetic perfume (hidden phthalates)

When a product only indicates "Parfum" without specifying origin, it may contain phthalates, associated with hormonal alterations in experimental studies.

Natural brands usually use certified natural perfume or essential oils.

BHT / BHA

Synthetic antioxidants with suspected endocrine disruption in animal studies.

So... should I be worried?

European legislation on cosmetics is strict.
Authorized products comply with safety limits.

However, many people prefer to reduce their daily cumulative exposure, especially in:

  • Pregnancy

  • Breastfeeding

  • Hormonal problems

  • Thyroid pathology

  • Endometriosis

In these cases, opting for aluminum-free deodorants without controversial synthetic compounds can provide peace of mind.

How to choose a more respectful deodorant

✔ Search for "aluminum-free"
✔ Check that it does not contain parabens
✔ Evita BHT
✔ Prefer certified natural perfume
✔ Read the INCI, not just the front claim

Choosing wisely

It is not a matter of being alarmed, but of making informed choices.

Small daily decisions can reduce the cumulative chemical load without complicating your routine.

And that is precisely what we are looking for:
take care of yourself without extremes, but with awareness.
